Abstract: Strains of Escherichia coli in Liaoning Province were isolated and identified and their pathogenicity was examined. From 2001 to 2005,226 strains of E.coli were obtained by isolation from the di-seased or dead chickens and dead embryo from 14 prefectures of the Province, and 105 strains out of them were serotyped, with 29.52%(31/105) being O78 and 10.48%(11/105) being O109 .Results indicated that O78 and O109 were the predominant serotypes in Liaoning Province.Pathogenicity of 49 E.coli strains selected randomly from the 105 strains were examined endotracheally in 1 day-old SPF chickens.Six birds per isolate were inoculated intracheally with 0.1mL of a 24h Luria-bertani(LB) broth culture containing 1×107CFU E.coli.Based on mortality and pathological changes during a 7-day post-inoculation period,755%(37/49),18.4%(9/49),6.1%(3/49) were characterized as high, intermediate and low pathogeni-city,respectively.These results showed that the all E.coli isolates were pathogenic,in which 75.5% of strains were high pathogenic.Avian E.coli serotype O109 and its pathogenicity were reported the first time in China. |
